About Garrett Ordiway

This page is to let you know more about me.

First, let me start by saying that I believe all art should stand on its own merits, separate from its author. You can hate me and love my work, or love me and hate my work. For that reason, I hesitated to include any information about myself at all about myself on my book(s) or website. Alas, an author website is misses the point if it contains no information about the author. So, here we are.

Second, I am not a professional author, by my own reckoning. I consider a professional to be someone who makes the majority of their income from their profession. Writing is a hobby for me - I spend more on it than I make. While I would love to be able to write full time one day, that is not my goal. While I understand what it takes to write commercially successful material, the meta strategies are at odds with the style of writing I enjoy. I would rather write for a small community of individuals who enjoy my taste in storytelling than a cater to a large crowd of strangers.

Hobbies

Writing isn’t my only hobby. I have always enjoyed creating. Since before elementary school, I would build card castles as robust as possible, then destroy them with rubber bands and Nerf guns. In junior high school, I started making stop-animation with an old Hi8 camera - all brute force with no means of digitally editing.

I took up Dungeons and Dragons and was immediately designated as the dungeon master of the group. I enjoyed creating fantasy worlds, and my friends enjoyed playing in them. Table Top RPGs like D&D are, in a way, like group story telling. Creating flavorful summaries of prior game sessions to use as ‘reminder’ text for the beginning of the next session was probably my first experience with writing for an audience.

I’ve done graphic design for every company I’ve ever worked at, though it has never been part of the job description. I just enjoy it.
